One of the most striking pieces of architecture in Dungeness has hit the market, and it’s designed for admiring the stark scenery of Britain’s only desert. The single-storey Pobble House was designed by Guy Hollaway Architects – who named it after the ancient Kentish word for pebble – and it resembles a trio of interconnecting pods.

    The Spaces Mag

Situated on the coast, Dungeness is Europe’s only desert, and as such a place of absolute nature, the force of which is to be found in the rusting boats that lie scattered along the shore, and in the marks it leaves on just about anything – our houses, its lighthouse, the nearby power station.

It is materiality, history, and nature that informs Pobble House, its use of corten, larch and concrete an echo of the land in which it sits, its position, size and orientation faithful to the building it replaced, and to the rules designed to protect the very wildness that makes its location so very special. Less the product of an architect’s plans, it is a house made – respectfully, differently, beautifully – of the desert, for the desert.

The area is home to a vast array of wildlife and plant species, including many species of insects and coastal/migratory birds that cannot be found anywhere else in the UK. As a result of this the area is recognized as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), National Nature Reserve, Conservation Area and Special landscape Area.

Forming the striking architectural backdrop for our recent ’Sailor Made’ fashion story, Pobble House stands alone within Dungeness’ sparse headland. This new home designed by Guy Holloway Architects appears hovering in the eerie landscape, a worthy addition to an area already famed for its unique architecture.

Designed by Guy Holloway Architects, Pobble House is sited within the sparse Dungeness headland. Three simple forms – clad in larch, Corten steel and cement, respectively – define the house's volumes and add character. Inside, the living space fully absorbs the sparse natural surroundings.
